Here at IRA, we’re often asked, what I can do to fight ritual abuse or just child sexual abuse in general? We’ve come up with four simple suggestions.
First, talk to your kids about bodily autonomy and appropriate versus inappropriate behavior by adults.
Second, if you’re a Latter Day Saint with a calling, and a victim comes to you to report sexual abuse, take that victim to the police. Disregard what the LDS leadership says about reporting sexual abuse, and go straight to the police. If a perpetrator confesses to you, go straight to the police.
Third, organize politically and support Rep. Ken Ivory’s House Joint Resolution 7, which will provide a statewide referendum to amend the Utah Constitution so that all child sexual abuse victims have 35 years after they turn 18 to sue their abusers instead of the current 4 years that some victims are limited to because of the Utah Supreme Court’s decision.
Finally, if you see something that doesn’t look right, trust your instincts. Say something, do something.
I’m a spicy Alabama Mormon, and this video reflects that to some degree. Say what you will about the Alabama way of doing things, but it’s effective in college football and in dealing with rapists. As always, thanks for reading, listening, watching, and sharing the material, as well as for your subscriptions and financial support.
Heard about your work on 132 problems podcast. Respect.
Problem in Utah is that the church literally control the entire system, politically, judiciary, and law enforcement. A victim has a tough time here. You get sent to a shrink who is usually a LDS CS. They continue to control you so you never heal. All the social service organizations are corrupt. I truly believe this is the situation worldwide. I think the only ray of sunshine will come when these organizations are flipped.
